- 2024 Norwegian Poker Championship Winners
The 2024 Norwegian Poker Championship took place recently in Norway with nearly 4,000 participants and ten new national champions crowned.
There were plenty of notable Norwegian players present, including high-stakes pro Kayhan Mokri, 13-time WCOOP champion Tobias Leknes and former WCOOP POY Mikal Blomile, who took down a Deepstack event for 360,000 NOK (around $32963 USD).
A total of 3,693 players participated in the series, making for over 11,500 entries across 29 tournaments. Non-Norwegian participants included France's Dominick French, Switzerland's Maureen Bloechlinger, Germany's Lars Jurgens and Scotland's Andrew Leathem.
"The result was a 100-table poker venue full of people every day and evening, with most tournaments seeing record-breaking fields," organizers said in a press release.

Champions Crowned in Norway
PokerNewswrote about the Norwegian Poker Championships in August, noting that the series was about more than poker and would feature a rib tour and an opportunity to experience the famous Norwegian fjords in a rib boat.
The series was a big success and resulted in record-breaking fields, including 2,162 players in the Main Event, which was a freezeout tournament. Vebjørn Monstad topped the record-breaking field to win 1,217,500 NOK.
"Getting so many players in a flight without re-entries is almost unheard of, and it's great to see so many wanting to compete in these tournaments," said organizer Thomas Udness.
The series attracted young participants with an "Under 25" tournament that had 359 entrants. Jon Holtan Øverbø took down the event for 84,000 NOK.
"Poker organisors are usually biased towards running Seniors events, but all potential senior players come to play anyway," said Udness. "We want new players to have a shot at a title amongst friends. This is the third year we have ran this event and it grows tremendously each year and helps us greatly with recruitment."
One of the most successful players at the festival was Kayhan Mokri, who has built up $6.7 million in Hendon Mobearnings since his first cash in 2016. Last month, the Norwegian won the €100,000 EPT Super High Roller in Barcelona for the second year in a row, this time winning €1,372,420.
Mokri was interviewed on the PokerNewsPodcast last year and talked about pulling multiple six-figure bounties in the Bahamas.

- Throughout the game, you can have more options for forming runs or sets if you hold onto a variety of cards from different suits. You might be able to make runs with different combinations when other players discard cards, for instance, if you have a mix of high and low cards from different suits. Having this flexibility can help you keep the game moving forward & keep your opponents guessing about your strategy. Because they give you important information about what your opponents are collecting or discarding, discards are crucial to rummy strategy. 25-01-04
- Players should also pay attention to what their opponents do because this can reveal important information about their tactics & possible melds. Players' chances of winning can be greatly increased by fusing their understanding of the game mechanics with astute observational abilities. Creating successful rummy strategies is essential for players to outmaneuver their rivals and increase their own chances of forming melds. When feasible, giving priority to forming runs over sets is a basic tactic. Since runs can hold a greater variety of cards—particularly when you are holding cards from several suits—they are typically more adaptable. 25-01-04
- Focusing on creating your own melds is crucial, but it's also critical to observe what your opponents are doing. Avoid discarding cards that could aid your opponent in completing their melds if you observe that they are gathering cards of a specific suit or rank. By using this defensive strategy, you can stop them in their tracks and keep control of the game. 25-01-04

- You can develop a tactical edge that could help you win by finding a balance between advancing your objectives and impeding those of your rivals. Although it is frequently linked to games like blackjack, card counting is also a very useful strategy in rummy. Players are better able to make decisions about their own hands & the possible hands of their opponents if they keep track of the cards that have been played and those out of the deck. For instance, you can infer that there is a much lower chance of drawing high-ranking cards if you observe that a number of them have already been discarded. With this information, you can make better decisions about whether to keep lower-ranking cards or try something different. 25-01-04
- Jokers are frequently used too early in the game without being fully utilized, which is a common mistake made by players. Consider holding onto a Joker until it can perform multiple melds or greatly increase the overall strength of your hand rather than using it right away after it is drawn. Knowing when to refrain from using a joke is also crucial. It might be better to save the Joker for later rounds when it could have a bigger effect on your gameplay if you have other good ways to form sets or runs without depending on it. 25-01-04
- You can learn more about your opponent's hand composition by observing how they discard cards, which frequently means they no longer need them. It could be prudent to refrain from picking up cards from a specific suit or rank if you observe that your opponent frequently discards those cards. This is because they might be a part of a bigger strategy that you are not aware of. Also, strategically using discards can improve your own gameplay. 25-01-04
